Girl with a rose
Smiling girl as a semi-nude with her dress slipped down, looking out of a window boarded up underneath. She has pushed aside a green curtain and is holding out a rose to the viewer or her cavalier, while holding a bouquet of violets in her other hand. The delicately painted genre picture plays with the erotic motif and the love symbols of the flowers; at the same time it has a narrative component, reinforced by the second girl in the background looking over her shoulder in amusement. The plastically modeling style of figures with soft lighting suggests that the artist studied at an academy in Germany or France and that it was created in the mid-19th century. accept. oil/canvas; R. and indistinct. signed in Greek.; 86cm x 50.5cm.
