urkhard Mangold ( September 10, 1873 in Basel , † October 17, 1950 in Basel ) was a Swiss poster designer , painter , graphic artist and glass painter . He created murals and was a pioneer of Swiss poster art. Mangold's family came from Böckten and were naturalized in Basel in 1868.
Mangold grew up in the same house as August Suter at Albanvorstadt 44 in Basel. After leaving school he attended drawing and painting courses with Fritz Schider at the general trade school in Basel . From 1890 to 1893 he did an apprenticeship as a decorative painter.
In 1894 he traveled to Paris , followed by a longer stay in Munich from 1894 to 1900 , first as a student and then as a teacher at the art academy. At that time, Munich was a leader in poster art. Mangold became one of the exponents of Art Nouveau poster art of the first half of the 20th century. He also ran the "studio for decorative arts" at this time and restored the murals of Peleș Castle in Romania .
Mangold created wall and glass paintings, decorative designs for parades and festivals, book illustrations, small graphics such as bookplates, diplomas, calendar graphics, festival cards and carnival lanterns. His achievements as a pioneer of modern artistic poster lithography and glass painting are significant. Along with Emil Cardinaux , Eduard Stiefel and Otto Baumberger , Mangold was one of the first artists to recognize poster design as a main occupation and an independent medium.
In 1900 Mangold returned to Basel. He married Anna Katharina Krauss , who came from Franconia . The marriage produced three children. From 1903 onwards, numerous facade and wall paintings were created in Basel (including Zwinglihaus , town hall , Rheinsprung 1, main post office , "Zum Wolf", restaurant Schuhmachernz, restaurant "Zum Braunen Mutz", hotel "Basler Hof", auditorium of the Gotthelf school building) as well as at the ETH Zurich , barracks Chur, ref. Urnäsch Church.
In 1905 his poster design for the Federal Song Festival in Zurich was awarded. From 1905 Mangold also dealt with glass painting. In 1911, together with Otto Plattner , he restored Wilhelm Balmer 's facade paintings of the Basel City Hall . Mangold and Plattner immortalized themselves there as the two faces seen behind bars. In the period from 1919 to 1921 Mangold created the windows of the Leonhardskirche in Basel, in the 1930s numerous panes for the "Warteck " brewery and its restaurants, 1911 to 1912 two windows in the church of Konolfingen in Art Nouveau style, in the war year 1915 the choir windows ofChurch in Hasle near Burgdorf with the central theme of the good Samaritan as a contemporary interpretation of the Konolfingen window and also a series of «Dance of Death». Mangold was a friend of classical church music and an enthusiastic choir singer.
From 1909 to 1911 he was a member of the Federal Art Commission and from 1909 to 1910 its president. Mangold designed various lithographs for the Swiss National Exhibition in 1914 . From 1915 he taught lithography and glass painting at the trade school for three years. One of his students was Niklaus Stoecklin .
Until 1929, Mangold was president of the commission of the trade school and the trade museum associated with it . He was also a book illustrator. Examples: In Verlag Zahn, Neuchâtel, the works Faithfulness and Honor (Swiss in foreign military service), Swiss own strength in lithography technology; Woodcuts for the CF Meyer Complete Edition,
1945 for Switzerland. Bibliophile Gesellschaft The book of Jesus Sirach , a number of Basel illustrated sheets and much more. He was also a teacher of woodcut art in Budapest for decades until 1944. He designed costumes and sets , e.g. B. as part of the celebration "500 years of Basel in the Confederation", and around 1944 as a director for the performance of Handel's Acis and Galathea in the Theater Basel .
In 2020, during the dismantling of the former Basel radio studio on the Bruderholz , several murals painted by Mangold and Charles Hindenlang were uncovered.
