About the Artist:
Calisto Peretti, the accomplished artist born on March 29, 1937, in Saint-Ghislain, Belgium, is a multifaceted talent known for his prowess in painting, sculpture, and graphic design. His artistic journey is deeply rooted in his family's working-class background, with his father being a miner who sought refuge in Belgium during the 1930s to escape fascist Italy. This familial connection would go on to shape Peretti's career and artistic mission.
Peretti's formal training began with his graduation from advertising and drawing courses at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Mons in 1954, laying the groundwork for his future artistic endeavors. However, it was in the aftermath of the tragic Bois du Cazier mining disaster in 1956 that he embarked on a remarkable path. He became a miner himself, using his artistic talents to create prevention drawings aimed at safeguarding the lives of his fellow miners. During periods of unemployment, he continued to develop his artistic skills, attending the painting workshop at the Mons Academy.
In 1959, Peretti's career took a pivotal turn when he joined the National Association for the Prevention of Occupational Accidents (ANPAT) in Brussels, where he established the "Graphic Creations" department and served as its Artistic Director until 1984. Here, he created over a thousand graphic prevention messages in the form of posters and signs, addressing safety concerns across various industries. Throughout his career, Peretti championed the creation of visually impactful images that respected the intelligence of workers, challenging prevailing prejudices and censorship in workplace safety campaigns.
Beyond his artistic achievements, Peretti made significant contributions to education, teaching drawing and painting at the Molenbeek St-Jean Academy and offering instruction in perspective and anatomy at the Higher School of Plastic and Visual Arts of the State (ESAPV) in Mons. His legacy also includes active participation in various art groups, collaborations, and numerous exhibitions both in Belgium and internationally. Calisto Peretti's art continues to serve as a testament to the power of creativity in advocating for social causes and promoting ethical values through visual expression.
