These bottles are part of an exclusive auction featuring 181 items selected from the distinguished collection of Sir Jacques Bardac. Sir Jacques Bardac, a French national, served as the representative of the French Agricultural Credit Corporation and Investment Bank in Beiping, China, beginning in 1920. During the Republican period, he was also the financial agent of the French government in China. Bardacs role in China allowed him to forge close connections with individuals from various walks of life, including prominent French sinologists and Chinese art experts.
Through these relationships and his deep interest in Chinese art, Bardac amassed a notable collection of ancient Chinese artworks, including porcelain and Buddhist statues. His collection reflects his appreciation for the richness of Chinese culture and artistry.
In 1941, due to the wartime conditions, Bardac left China and, unable to return home, relocated to the United States at the invitation of a close friend. Many items in this auction were collected during his time in the U.S. and represent his ongoing dedication to preserving Chinese art. Bardacs descendants continue to honor his legacy by maintaining a significant collection of fine Chinese artworks.
