Footnote:
Maurice Cockrill was a renowned Modern British artist, deeply connected with the Liverpool School. He made his name both as an educator and an artist, frequently exhibiting at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. Cockrill moved to London in the early 1980s, where his style began to evolve into what is now known as Romantic Expressionism. His move was a bold one, particularly when he took over Bridget Riley's old studio in Clerkenwell, London, where he became neighbors with fellow artist Paula Rego.
Although Cockrill’s works were frequently displayed across European cities like Paris and Düsseldorf, his growing style and reluctance to seek the spotlight meant he never quite achieved the level of prominence in the UK that his talent deserved. Despite this, he was greatly admired by his peers and is often referred to as a "painter’s painter."
In 1999, he was elected as a Royal Academician and became the Keeper of the Royal Academy Schools in 2004. His later years were spent in North Wales, where his childhood experiences in the countryside profoundly influenced his artistic work, which became more inspired by the natural landscape around him. His works showcase a high level of technical mastery and versatility, with a style that shifts between challenging and lyrically beautiful.
