About the Artist:
Maurits (Maurice) Schelck was a Belgian painter born in Aalst in 1906 and passed away in Sint-Martens-Latem in 1978. He received his artistic training at the Aalst Academy under the guidance of A. Ysabey (1916-1923) and later studied in Brussels under H. Richier. In 1931, Schelck honed his skills in the free workshops in Paris. Although he initially worked within traditional figurative design, his artistic journey evolved over the years. After winning several prestigious awards, including the Jeune Peinture Belge Prize (1925) and the Godecharle Prize (1931), he founded the art association Nieuw Leven in Aalst in 1926 and taught at the Academy from 1927 to 1934. Following a hiatus from painting, Schelck returned to the art world in the early 1950s, embracing abstract art. In 1961, he transitioned back to a more figurative, expressionist style characterized by vibrant colors and dynamic compositions. His works, which include landscapes, rural scenes, and portraits, are marked by a distinct expressiveness that sets him apart within Flemish painting. Schelck's art is represented in museums in Antwerp and Deurle.
