Description:
A signed letter ("J. H. Addington") dated 13 May 1801, addressed to the Paymaster of the Forces, Sylvester Douglas, 1st Baron Glenbervie. The letter discusses a £20,754.19.2½ bill drawn by Mr. Baynes, the Deputy Paymaster General to the Army in the Mediterranean, for the ordinary service of the forces, with instructions to credit the amount accordingly.
John Hiley Addington served as a Lord of the Treasury from 1800-01 and 1802-03, during which time his brother was Chancellor of the Exchequer.
The letter references Marmorice Bay (now Marmaris, Turkey), where in 1801, a British force of 120 ships under Admiral Keith and 14,000 troops under General Abercromby anchored for eight weeks in preparation for their campaign against Napoleon in Egypt and Syria.
