Description:
A distinguished half-length portrait of Reverend Samuel Glasse, DD FRS (1735–1812), depicted seated at a desk in a contemplative pose. Glasse, a noted High-Church Anglican, served as First Chaplain to the Marine Society from 1781 to 1812. The portrait’s precise rendering of fabric, light, and expression showcases the refined neoclassical style associated with George Francis Joseph, ARA. The work is believed to be based on an engraving by William Bond, first published in 1803 (National Portrait Gallery no. D2779). However, the timeline and provenance suggest it could be the original portrait by Joseph, whose whereabouts remain unknown.
