Description:
A pair of well-preserved Byzantine pottery bowls from the 13th century AD, originating from the Near East/Holy Land. These bowls feature intricate sgraffito designs, with birds and linear motifs adorning the interiors. The design is carved through a white glaze coating, revealing the red clay beneath. Each bowl rests on a ring foot, with wide plates that rise into a thick rim and shallow basin. These pieces were widely produced and exported throughout the Byzantine Empire and have been discovered in various shipwrecks, particularly in the Aegean Sea.

From a private East Coast collection, New York, USA; formerly held in a New York gallery collection, acquired in 2010.
