About the Artist:
William Harby led a remarkable life, alternating and overlapping careers in both art and engineering. He was born on January 28, 1927, in Brooklyn, New York, to Isaac Harby and Isabel Solomon Harby. He pursued his education at the Loomis School and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, earning two degrees: Bachelor of Science in Business and Engineering Administration, followed by Mechanical Engineering.
After serving as an ambulance driver in the American Field Service and the US Army from 1952 to 1954, he pursued his passion for art by studying in London and Paris under the GI Bill, planting the seeds for his later second career in the visual arts.
In the tech industry, particularly in the Boston area, he worked as a maintenance engineer, design engineer, consultant, and structural analyst for companies like Raytheon, Advanced Research, and Nabisco. Additionally, he served as a program manager at the Harvard College Observatory for the Orbiting Solar Observatory from 1965 to 1985, which was a joint project with NASA and the Skylab Program.
In the middle of his engineering career, William Harby made the transition to become a full-time artist, focusing on both painting and sculpture, depending on the seasons, weather, and travel plans. He honed his skills in marble work during a residency in Carrara, Italy. Harby frequently exhibited his artwork, which can be found in many private and institutional collections. Notably, he collaborated with Laura Catanzaro and C. R. Rogers to win a competition for the design of the Vietnam Veterans' Memorial in Green Park, Worcester, Massachusetts, completed in 2002.
William Harby passed away on November 2, 2015, at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, following a long struggle with Parkinson's disease. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Pappas, a sister, Ann Harby Cunningham, of Wellesley, Massachusetts, his son, Stephen William Harby of Santa Monica, California, four step-children, and numerous cousins and nephews.
