Xiaoqi Li, 'Chain'
Artist: Xiaoqi Li
Title: Chain
Date: 2008
Medium: Oil on canvas
Dimensions: 130 x 160 cm
Condition Report: In good condition
Signature: Signed and dated lower right
Description:
A vertical composition featuring a headless figure in the foreground, set against a textured neutral grey background. In the upper right section, a distant cage encloses a vague figure, its presence shrouded in ambiguity. A diagonal connection between these two elements forms the primary compositional direction. The figure in the foreground holds a thin thread attached to a pulley, which in turn is connected to the cage, creating a sense of tension and entrapment. A striking red accent on the pulley disrupts the otherwise monochromatic palette, serving as a focal point. The edges of the canvas remain untouched, exposing its raw texture and subtly framing the eerie, surreal scene.
