Description:
Undergo is a thought-provoking screen print series by Yin Zhaoyang, featuring ten portraits of Chinese leader Mao Zedong. Arranged in two rows of five, the portraits chronologically depict Mao from his youth to his later years. The artwork employs a striking visual transition, with the earliest portrait nearly washed out in white, progressing through increasing saturation until the final image is shrouded in darkness. This gradual transformation symbolizes the passage of time and the evolution of both the individual and historical memory.
By manipulating saturation and contrast, Yin Zhaoyang offers a nuanced reflection on power, legacy, and the impermanence of influence. The work embodies the artist’s signature exploration of history, personal perception, and collective consciousness, inviting viewers to contemplate the intersection of political identity and artistic representation.
