The Cuzco School was a Roman Catholic artistic tradition in Cusco, Peru, aimed at converting the Incas to Catholicism. Religious artists formed a school to teach drawing and painting, and its influence spread beyond Cusco to other Andean cities, Ecuador, and Bolivia. The artworks focused on religious themes, lacking perspective but featuring vibrant reds, yellows, and earthy colors. They used lavish gold leaf, especially in depictions of the Virgin Mary. The works were freer than European art, with brighter colors, distorted and dramatic images, and incorporation of native flora and fauna.
