Princess Victoria Alberta Elizabeth Mathilde Marie of Hesse and by Rhine, later known as Victoria Mountbatten, Marchioness of Milford Haven, was the eldest daughter of Louis IV, Grand Duke of Hesse, and his first wife, Princess Alice of the United Kingdom, daughter of Queen Victoria. Married to her first cousin, Prince Louis of Battenberg, an officer in the Royal Navy, she spent much of her married life at naval outposts throughout Europe.
