Circa 600–400 BC, Mediterranean. A well-preserved example of an akinakes, a short straight sword historically associated with Persian culture and widely recognized by the Greeks of the 5th century BC.

The akinakes was a distinctive sword commonly depicted in ancient art, including reliefs at Persepolis, where Persian nobles are shown wearing it through their robe knots. It was used by various cultures, including the Medes, Scythians, and later the Greeks, and was often crafted from iron, though some ceremonial versions were made in gold.
Cultural Significance:
The akinakes is mentioned in Herodotus’ writings and is associated with tribute to Athena on the Acropolis. Royal Persian gifts, such as the one Xerxes sent to Hellespont, included gold akinakes.
