About the Artist:
Brian Donnelly, better known as KAWS, was born in 1974 in Jersey City, New Jersey. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in illustration from the School of Visual Arts in New York. Initially, KAWS worked as a freelance animator for Disney, contributing to various animated films.
KAWS began his artistic journey as a graffiti artist in Jersey City before moving to New York City in the early 1990s. His early work involved subverting images on bus shelters, phone booth advertisements, and billboards, quickly gaining notoriety.
In the late 1990s, KAWS ventured into designing and producing limited edition vinyl toys, which gained immense popularity among art toy collectors, particularly in Japan. He has also collaborated with renowned companies, including Nike, Vans, and Comme des Garçons.
KAWS is highly acclaimed for his acrylic paintings and large sculptures. His iconic gray-scale sculpture, featuring a figure reminiscent of Mickey Mouse obscuring its face with both hands, is a standout piece. This sculpture even became a Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade balloon in 2012. Additionally, KAWS's company redesigned MTV's moon man statue for the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards.
KAWS's work has been exhibited in prestigious institutions worldwide, including solo shows at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, High Museum of Art, Modern Art Museum, and the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum. His influence extends to galleries in Paris, London, Berlin, and Tokyo.
KAWS currently resides and works in Brooklyn, New York.
