The work depicts a solitary fisherman navigating a mist-filled expanse of water, the surrounding atmosphere articulated through restrained tonal washes and rhythmic brushwork. In the foreground, a rocky outcrop with pine trees anchors the composition, while distant spatial zones dissolve into an expansive void of mist and water.
Executed in monochrome ink, the painting demonstrates a disciplined control of tonal gradation and spatial economy. The calligraphic inscription positioned in the upper register provides both compositional balance and literary resonance, reinforcing the traditional integration of painting and poetry.
Xiong Daiping’s approach is firmly rooted in literati landscape traditions, particularly those of the Song and Yuan dynasties, in which expressive brushwork and conceptual abstraction supersede naturalistic description. The present work continues this lineage, emphasising emotional tone and atmospheric suggestion over topographical specificity.
