Flowers and Birds, n.d.
ink and color on paper
138 × 69 cm (54.3 × 27.2 in)
This large vertical composition presents a lush natural scene in which broad banana leaves, flowering branches, and two birds in flight are arranged within a dynamic pictorial field. The interplay of soft pink blossoms, deep green foliage, and warm earth tones creates a vivid chromatic rhythm across the surface.
Chun Lei’s brushwork combines controlled ink outlines with expansive colour washes, producing a balance between structural clarity and painterly fluidity. The birds, rendered in mid-flight, introduce a sense of directional movement that animates the otherwise densely vegetated composition.
The work is firmly situated within the hua niao hua tradition, in which floral and avian subjects carry symbolic associations of seasonal renewal and natural harmony. Here, these motifs are reinterpreted through a heightened chromatic sensibility and a more expressive compositional structure.
Flowers and Birds demonstrates Chun Lei’s ability to revitalise a classical genre through bold colour harmonies and energetic brush handling. The result is a work of both decorative richness and compositional vitality.
