John Murray Barton was born in New York City on February 8, 1921. He received his education at the Nahum Tschacbasov School of Art and the Art Students League where he studied under George Bridgman. Barton's artistic style involved incorporating materials such as sand, concrete, and other substances into his oil paintings, murals, and prints, thereby creating a multi-sensory experience for viewers. Some of his notable commissions included murals at the New York Board of Education and a "History of Money" mural at the South Carolina State Bank. Throughout his career, Barton collaborated with other artists and held many one-man shows at galleries such as the Fantasy Gallery in Washington, DC, and the Hudson Gallery in New York. He also lectured on technique and creative expression at various universities along the East Coast. Barton passed away in 2000, but his work remains on display at important institutions such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC, the New York Public Library, the Haifa Museum of Modern Art in Israel, the Brooklyn Museum, the Fort Worth Art Center, the Oakland Museum, the Yale University Museum, and many other public and private collections worldwide.
