George Caleb Bingham, the renowned American artist, was born on a farm in Augusta County, Virginia, as the second child of Mary and Henry Vest Bingham. After the family moved to Franklin, Missouri, in 1819, George received his initial education from his mother and showed early talent as an artist. At the age of twelve, he became an apprentice to a cabinet maker and later received art tutoring while working at a school. Bingham honed his skills in painting portraits, and by age nineteen, he was able to support himself through his art. In 1838, he established a studio in St. Louis, gaining prominence as a portrait artist. He then pursued formal education in Philadelphia, studying at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and later spent time in Washington, D.C., painting portraits of prominent politicians.
