About the Artist:
Born in Subotica on the Yugoslav-Hungarian border in 1935, Itzchak Tarkay overcame tremendous adversity in his early life. Deported to the Nazi concentration camp Mauthausen-Gusen in 1944, Tarkay survived the Holocaust and emigrated to Israel with his family in 1949.
In 1951, Tarkay received a scholarship to the Bezalel Art Academy in Jerusalem, but his studies were cut short due to financial difficulties and his mandatory military service. After his service, Tarkay continued his art education at the Avni Institute of Art in Tel Aviv, graduating in 1956.
Tarkay garnered significant acclaim through numerous exhibitions, including notable shows at the International Art Expo in New York City (1986, 1987). His work is represented in public, private, and corporate collections worldwide. Tarkay's art, characterized by its adherence to classic styles and its timeless appeal, reflects influences from Matisse and Toulouse-Lautrec. His paintings are celebrated for their enduring value and aesthetic beauty.
Itzchak Tarkay passed away on June 3, 2012, leaving behind a legacy of art that continues to captivate and inspire.
