Untitled, n.d.
mixed media on paper
75.5 × 84 cm (29.7 × 33.1 in)
This mixed media work presents a dense constellation of symbolic imagery, including stylised heads, childlike figures, geometric forms, and graphic signs such as crosses, moons, and question marks. The composition is structured through a loose grid system, within which each segment functions as an independent yet interconnected visual unit. The palette is anchored by deep blues and punctuated by red and green accents.
Silvain’s visual language draws upon Surrealist and Outsider traditions, filtered through a deeply autobiographical sensibility. The juxtaposition of simplified figuration with cryptic symbolic elements produces a layered pictorial space in which meaning is suggested rather than explicitly defined. The surrounding border drawings further extend the work’s narrative field.
The work reflects the artist’s broader preoccupation with memory, psychological residue, and the expressive possibilities of childlike mark-making. Its structured fragmentation evokes a sense of reconstructed narrative, assembled through associative rather than descriptive logic.
This Untitled composition is representative of Silvain’s mature practice, in which symbolic abstraction and personal mythology converge. Its visual complexity and emotional resonance underscore its significance within his oeuvre.
