About the Artist:
Henry Schouten was a Belgian painter renowned for his depictions of farm animals and pastoral landscapes. Born in 1864 in Indonesia, he later studied at the Academy of Brussels from 1876 to 1881. Strongly influenced by fellow animal painter Alfred Jacques Verwee, Schouten developed a distinctive style that combined realism with an expressive, light-filled palette. His works often featured livestock, herdsmen, hunters, and peasants, capturing the essence of rural life with remarkable detail and sensitivity. Throughout his career, Schouten used various pseudonyms, including Jos Klaus, Joseph Klass, Meulat, V. Marinus, and J. Remis.
