Description:
A classical and serene depiction of the Madonna tenderly holding the Christ Child, this 17th-century Italian School painting reflects the influence of Sassoferrato, known for his delicate and devotional representations of the Virgin Mary. The soft modeling of the figures, the rich yet muted color palette, and the intimate composition suggest that this work may be a period copy after Sassoferrato, comparable to a similar piece sold at Christie’s, New York, 23 May 1997, lot 19.
Executed with a refined technique, the painting embodies the tranquility and grace characteristic of Marian imagery, making it a compelling example of the Baroque period’s religious devotion and artistic mastery. Despite visible aging, including craquelure, pigment darkening, and stretcher marks, the essence of the composition and its emotional depth remain well preserved.
