About the Artist - Jan Van Looy:
Jan Van Looy was a renowned Belgian artist, born in Laeken/Brussels in 1882 and passing away in Schaerbeek in 1971. He was a multi-talented creative, working as a painter, draftsman, watercolorist, and graphic artist. His childhood was spent in Laeken, but from the age of fourteen, he frequently lived in Duisburg and Tervuren. It was during this period that he began creating numerous sketches in various Belgian locales, including Leefdaal, Vossem, Tervuren, and Duisburg.
Van Looy's artistic education commenced at the Academy in Brussels under the guidance of G. Van Strydonck from 1897 to 1900. In the evenings, he attended the free academy La Patte, where he formed friendships with fellow artists such as J. Laudy and J. Brouwers. He resided in Ternat and Tervuren and was celebrated for his landscape, river views, portraits, interiors, and still lifes. His inspiration spanned regions like Brussels, Brabant, the Kempen, and the Scheldt area.
Van Looy employed a spontaneous and generous brushstroke, along with a rich color palette in his work. During the summer months, he often lived and worked in Sint-Idesbald, where he maintained a studio. Throughout his life, he held great admiration for the Tervuurse and Dendermonde School. His first solo exhibition took place at the Intérieur gallery in Brussels. He primarily focused on landscapes of Tervuren, Ternat, the Kempen, and Kempen interiors in his art. His work can be found in museums in Ghent, Brussels, Mechelen, Tournai, and more. Jan Van Looy is listed in BAS I and "Two Centuries of Signatures of Belgian Artists."
