About the artist:
John Weiss describes his career as a love affair with the talent he believes God has given him, the love of life, and the love of his subject matter. His deep appreciation for dogs began during his childhood in Akron, Ohio, where he developed a love for man's best friend. He credits his disciplined approach to art to his father, who was a draftsman.
Weiss's artistic journey started with his childhood love for drawing and continued through high school art classes. While attending Kent State University, he was inspired by an exhibit of Andrew Wyeth's work in Maine, which encouraged him to pursue art further. After completing his college education, Weiss entered the landscape business. However, with the support of his wife, Tammy, he decided to pursue a full-time career in painting.
Although he considers himself essentially self-taught, Weiss drew inspiration from the work of artists he admired, learning from their methods and techniques. His experience in the field has been his greatest teacher.
John Weiss has had the privilege of painting some of the most important dogs of our time and has formed close bonds with many four-legged friends worldwide. His art has found its way into the collections of prominent families, including a portrait commissioned by Lady Barlow, which was presented to Queen Elizabeth. Jane Firestone is another notable collector, and John's sketch of her German Shepherd, Hatter, is part of the AKC Museum of the Dog's permanent collection in St. Louis.
Weiss has received numerous awards and accolades, including the Cover of the Year award from the National Dog Writers Association and recognition as U.S. Art magazine's "Artist to Watch." His artwork has been reproduced in various forms, such as calendars, mugs, notepads, Christmas cards, and notecards. John Weiss's passion for painting is driven by his love for dogs and his desire to capture the many emotions they share. Through his work, he hopes to convey the joy and encouragement that these faithful companions bring to our lives.
