Despite these difficulties, Alt's family instilled in him an appreciation for the arts, particularly music and jazz, which would influence his future creative endeavors.
Alt's artistic journey began with an apprenticeship as a poster designer and shop window dresser in 1956. However, his passion for fine art led him to pursue studies in draughtsmanship and fashion design at the Berlin Technical School in 1959. He eventually ventured into fine art, studying figure drawing and painting under notable artists like Walter Bergmann and Hermann Bachmann. In 1960, he gained admission to the University of the Arts, Berlin, where he honed his skills in abstraction and developed a Pop Art style characterized by vibrant, interlocking shapes.
Throughout his career, Alt achieved recognition for his abstract works, which spanned multiple mediums, including painting and sculpture. He also expanded his creative pursuits to furniture, clothing, and toy design. In 1991, he received the German Freemason's Culture Prize and later established the Otmar Alt Foundation in 1996, aimed at supporting young artists.
