About the Artist:
Zhu Fadong (朱发东), born in Kunming, Yunnan Province, China, is a conceptual and performance artist known for his thought-provoking social commentaries. A graduate of the Yunnan Academy of Fine Arts, he initially worked as an editor before exploring performance and contemporary art.
Zhu gained recognition in the early 1990s for his experimental performances, including Announcement of Missing Person (1993), where he posted missing person notices featuring his own image in Kunming, and This Person is for Sale (1994), in which he walked the streets of Beijing in a Mao jacket with a sign advertising himself for sale, reflecting on urban migration and personal identity.
His later works continued to challenge societal norms, such as Celebrity 48 (2008), a portrait of Mao Zedong composed of global brand logos, symbolizing the intersection of Chinese history and globalization. Zhu Fadong has exhibited internationally, with solo and group exhibitions across China, the United States, Japan, and Europe. He currently lives and works in Beijing.
