Description:
Haya Ran’s The Doll is a captivating and theatrical composition featuring six enigmatic characters, each adorned in a uniquely expressive costume. At the forefront, a woman dressed in black garments and a floral headpiece delicately holds a doll, evoking a sense of mystery. Beside her, a man wears a purple costume with cat-like ears and whiskers painted on his face, while another figure dons a striking 1920s-style outfit. Adding to the surreal atmosphere, one character wears a butterfly-shaped mask, another sports a horse-shaped hat, and a final figure is wrapped in flowing garments that serve as both attire and a unifying compositional element. Set against a deep black background, the figures are illuminated, emphasizing their intricate details and theatrical presence. Ran’s signature style, influenced by medieval techniques, lends the scene a timeless, dreamlike quality.
About the Artist:
Haya Ran was born in 1948 in Holon, Israel. From 1968 to 1973, she lived on Kibbutz Sasa before pursuing studies in graphic design at The Technion. Ran’s artistic approach is deeply influenced by medieval painters, which led her to develop a unique multilayer watercolor technique that mimics the richness of tempera painting. Her palette, dominated by reds, browns, and golds, draws inspiration from the world of performance arts—circuses, clowns, dancers, and the fantastical. Through her intricate and imaginative compositions, Ran invites viewers into a whimsical realm where theatricality and fine artistry intertwine.
