About the Artist:
Seundja Rhee (b. 1918, Jinju, Korea) was a pioneering Korean artist who left for Paris in 1951 to study formative arts. Rhee became an influential figure in Western painting and woodblock printing, remaining active in the art world into her nineties. Her work, which often integrated Korean themes, drew the attention of the Parisian art scene and later gained international recognition. Over a career spanning more than half a century, she created around 4,000 works, held 85 solo exhibitions, and participated in over 300 group exhibitions. Her collaborations with figures such as Michel Butor exemplified her diverse artistic reach, which included painting, pottery, tapestry, mosaic, and poetry, cementing her as a representative figure in modern Korean art.
