About the artist:
Gustav Olms (born June 23, 1865, in Hildesheim, Kingdom of Hanover; died January 23, 1927, in Düsseldorf) was a German painter, graphic artist, and illustrator. He came into the world as the ninth child of a printer, born into a well-established Hildesheim printer and publisher dynasty. From 1887 to 1891, Olms pursued his studies in painting at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, under the tutelage of renowned teachers like Heinrich Lauenstein, Hugo Crola, Peter Janssen d. Ä., Adolf Schill, Eduard von Gebhardt, and Julius Roeting.
Following his studies, Olms settled in Düsseldorf, where he built a career as an illustrator for various publishers, including Georg Olms Verlag, August Lax Verlagsbuchhandlung, August Steiger Verlag (owned by court book dealer W. Steiger), W. Crüwell's publishers, and L. Schwann's publishers. His skills also extended to the creation of commercial art, with notable projects including illustrations for promotional and sales materials for the Hamburger Kaffee-Import-Gesellschaft Emil Tengelmann, as well as designing skat playing cards for the publisher FA Lattmann, which were featured at the 1900 Paris World Exhibition.
