About the Artist:
Joseph J. Varga (1876–?) was a Hungarian-born painter and decorator who later immigrated to Buffalo, New York, in 1908. He received his artistic training in Székesfehérvár and Budapest, studying under various artists for seventeen years. Accomplished in both landscape and still-life painting, Varga was also a prominent church painter. Alongside Joseph Mazur (1897–1970), he decorated numerous churches in Buffalo, including St. Francis de Sales Roman Catholic Church, St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church, and St. John’s Lutheran Church. His decorative work extended to theaters and other buildings in the area. A member of the Buffalo Arts Club and the Buffalo Society of Artists, Varga’s artistic legacy remains a testament to his skill and dedication.
