Kurt Peiser 1887 – 1962
Born in Antwerp on January 5, 1887. He was a painter and etcher.
He attended the Royal Academy of Antwerp and, at eighteen, became a student of the marine painter Gérard Jabobs.
From a very young age, his playmates were the children of boatmen and, later, he lived among dockers and sailors.
The sea, the Scheldt, horses and all life in the port interest him. He shares the life of sailors and dockers by sailing and working with them. He becomes their friend, which leads him to depict their life in all its depth.
Throughout his existence, the people attracted him. This is how when he moved to Brussels, he frequented the working-class and poverty-stricken neighborhoods. In his paintings and etchings, he expresses the work, the joys and the sorrows of this people whom he loves deeply and who love him.
He had his first personal exhibition in Antwerp in 1907. Subsequently, he exhibited many times in Brussels, Antwerp, Liège, Ghent, Tournai, etc., and abroad, where he took part in group exhibitions. organized by the government.
Many official government and municipal organizations have acquired his works.
For service to the arts, he was named a Knight of the Order of Leopold and an Officer of the Order of Leopold II. He also holds several decorations as a resistance fighter.
Kurt Peiser died in Brussels on March 13, 1962.
