About the Artist:
Maria Gabriel, born in Lisbon in 1937, began her career as a painter and engraver in 1959. She honed her skills in engraving at the Engraving School in 1967/68, specializing in intaglio woodcuts, thanks to a grant from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. From 1976 to 1978, she expanded her expertise in lithography at the Hochschule Für Bildende Kunst in Hamburg. Gabriel is also noted for her contributions to the field of art education, having co-authored the book Técnicas de Gravura Artística with painter Alice Jorge, published in 1986 with support from the Ministry of Culture. Her diverse career also includes teaching engraving techniques, organizing exhibitions, and illustrating children's books.
