Maurice Schelck ( Aalst , March 2, 1906 - Ghent , November 11, 1978 ) was a Flemish painter.Ì
He studied at the art academies of Aalst (with his first exhibition), Brussels (training by Herman Richir ), Paris and Rome. He painted rural scenes, village figures, portraits and still lifes, and also ventured into abstracted landscapes. In his graphic work, his monumental figures remind of Henri Permeke and Frits van den Berghe
In 1928 he already excelled in a youth exhibition in the Giroux gallery in Brussels. At the age of twenty-five he won the prestigious Godecharle Prize (with a "mother and child") . He became a member of the artists' circle "Oost-West" in Deurle , to which almost all artists from the Leie region belonged. In his book "La peinture belge", published in 1930, Paul Collin already drew attention to Maurice Schelck.
He interrupted his career in 1932 as a painter when Mrs. Giroux died at the age of eighty. He owed much of his success to her. Her death plunged him into a predicament. In 1937 he gave only one exhibition at the Vyncke-Van Euck gallery in Ghent.
Suddenly, after years of silence, in 1959 he gave a major exhibition of lyrical abstract works in the (then) Brussels Center for Fine Arts (now BOZAR ). But two years later, he abruptly stopped this abstract direction.
He then gave exhibitions in the La Madeleine room in Brussels and in the Galerij Vyncke-Van Eyck in Ghent with figurative expressionist works, in which he could demonstrate his gift as a colorist and his unusually rich palette. He no longer used oil paint, but prepared his own colors from pure pigments, which he mixed with synthetic resins.
Schelck became a leading figure in the artists ' village of Sint-Martens-Latem since 1960 , when he came to settle there from Aalst in "Huize ten Wolken Jager", because he wanted to feel at the source of Flemish expressionism in this magical place. Since 1986 he also spent a lot of time in his apartment in Ostend, where he made many friends and also gave an exhibition in the former museum.
Schelck was friends with Leon De Smet , Hubert Malfait , Jules De Sutter , Evarist De Buck , Fons Roggeman , Luc-Peter Crombé , Joe van Rossem , Vic Dooms , Eduard De Clercq , Lea Vanderstraeten and Martin Wallaert .
Schelck, together with Hubert Malfait and Vic Dooms , is considered one of the last followers of the Latem School . Together with art critic Jan Dhaese and historian Hugo Van den Abeele , Schelck founded " The Painters of the Round Table ", a group of artists of diverse backgrounds (painters, sculptors, philosophers, poets, authors) who met every Sunday morning in the local village café 'Sint-Martinus'. ' and from which the foundation of the current "Latem Art Circle" was laid.
Schelck is buried in the Artists Cemetery in Sint-Martens-Latem.
He held numerous exhibitions, both at home and abroad.
His works are in museums in Antwerp, Ostend, Aalst, Milan and Montevideo, as well as in many private collections in Europe and America (USA, Canada, Uruguay).
In 1969 he was given a major retrospective exhibition in Venlo and Hilversum (92 works); in December 1969-January 1970 in the (then) Museum of Fine Arts of Ostend and in October 1970 in Aalst (in the Old Hospital with 206 works).
The church of Sint-Martens-Latem contains a large canvas.
