Salvador Dalí’s “The Treacherous to their Hosts” is a compelling work from the artist’s celebrated Divine Comedy series, produced between 1951 and 1960. This limited edition woodblock print, part of the 16-page edition Michler Lopsinger No. 1071, vividly illustrates a scene from Dante’s Inferno Canto 33.
Originally commissioned by the Italian government to commemorate Dante Alighieri, the project faced political challenges, leading Dalí to collaborate with French publisher Joseph Forêt. The final publication was completed on November 23, 1963, showcasing Dalí’s intricate wood engravings derived from his preparatory watercolors.
Dalí’s surreal vision brings to life the dark and haunting themes of betrayal and treachery depicted in this print. His distinctive style and masterful technique are evident in this piece, which is signed in the plate, adding a personal touch to the artwork.
