Ray by Keiko Moriuchi explores materiality and rhythm through the juxtaposition of bold red vertical bands and cascading white impasto. The upper half of the canvas features rhythmic red and white stripes, with each stroke rendered in thick, expressive layers. Below, the composition transitions into a waterfall of white impasto, adding depth and texture to the piece.
This work draws heavily from the Gutai Art Association’s focus on bodily gesture and material presence, with its intense use of color and texture conveying emotional and physical resonance. The colors red and white, rich in symbolic meaning in both Western and Japanese cultures, suggest a dialogue between ritual and abstraction. The verticality and dynamic flow of the work echo minimalist structures while retaining the performative essence of Gutai.
Keiko Moriuchi’s time in New York, where she encountered both Western minimalism and American action painting, further deepened her ability to bridge these influences with her Japanese heritage. Ray stands as a synthesis of this international exchange, offering a powerful expression of form, color, and materiality.
