Ray by Keiko Moriuchi is a luminous and tactile work executed in golden-yellow impasto, featuring dense vertical strokes punctuated by a central horizontal band. The composition achieves architectural balance, with the bolder central section subtly bisecting the canvas. The radiant gold palette, glowing with light and texture, evokes a sacred or ritualistic aura, drawing attention to the material presence of the paint.
This work exemplifies Moriuchi’s continued exploration of post-Gutai material abstraction. Her disciplined application of paint—thick, repetitive, and rhythmic—reflects her lifelong engagement with the texture and presence of materials. The use of gold in the composition recalls Buddhist iconography and sacred objects, while also resonating with Western color field painting. The tension between the meditative repetition and the expressive energy in the piece is a hallmark of Moriuchi’s distinctive approach.
A key member of the Gutai Art Association, Moriuchi’s early installations, such as her 108 floor cushions, established her focus on formal repetition and ritualistic significance. Ray continues this exploration through the language of paint, offering a contemplative experience that bridges Eastern spiritual practices with contemporary material experimentation.
