Ge Zhen presents an untitled composition in which densely worked organic forms emerge from a muted ground, suggestive of dried floral structures or seed pods caught in a state of quiet dissolution. The surface is built through layered passages of impasto and translucent scumbling, producing a tactile interplay between material density and atmospheric fragility. The absence of a defined subject allows gesture, texture, and chromatic vibration to assume primary expressive importance.
The work operates at the intersection of figuration and abstraction, with painterly strategies that recall post-war expressive traditions while remaining rooted in observation of natural cycles. The restrained yet complex palette—dominated by blacks, whites, ochres, and subdued violets—enhances the sense of organic decay and renewal.
While distinct from traditional Chinese ink aesthetics in medium, the work resonates conceptually with literati concerns regarding transience and natural transformation. The painterly surface functions as a site of accumulation and erosion, where material presence is constantly in flux.
Ge Zhen’s practice situates itself within a broader contemporary discourse in which nature is no longer depicted but reconstituted as an experiential field of gesture and memory.
