Landscape, n.d.
ink and colour on paper
39.4 × 13.8 in. (100 × 35 cm)
This vertically oriented landscape presents a monumental vista of jagged peaks, steep cliffs, and dense pine forests emerging through layered veils of mist. The composition unfolds in cascading spatial tiers, guiding the viewer’s gaze from foreground crags into distant atmospheric depth. Ink gradations and restrained mineral tones work in concert to generate a sense of expansive, meditative space.
The artist draws on the Northern Song monumental landscape tradition, particularly its emphasis on structural grandeur and geological precision. Textured brushwork and controlled washes evoke affinities with classical masters such as Fan Kuan and Li Cheng, while the introduction of subtle colouration signals a contemporary reinterpretation of the canon.
The work is grounded in the enduring philosophical framework of Chinese shanshui painting, in which mountainous landscapes function as sites of spiritual reflection, moral order, and metaphysical withdrawal. Within this lineage, the painting reaffirms the continued relevance of landscape as a cultural and contemplative form.
The work is in very good condition, with stable paper and well-preserved pigments. No significant deterioration is visible. Provenance: documentation can be provided upon request.
