This richly layered floral still life is driven by a sense of energy and chromatic density. The composition centres on a dark green vase filled with red, purple, and ivory blossoms, surrounded by bold accents of yellow and white. The arrangement unfolds across a warm ochre and terracotta-toned field, while a minimalist white tabletop introduces a moment of restraint, punctuated by two pink cherries that subtly echo the surrounding floral palette.
The work demonstrates Mo Xiong’s use of ink and watercolour techniques characterised by spontaneity and layered gesture. Splattering, dabbing, and loose brushstrokes build texture and depth, allowing the floral forms to emerge through accumulations of pigment rather than strict delineation. The dark vessel functions as a stabilising visual anchor, intensifying the contrast between grounded form and expressive movement.
As part of a square-format series, the painting reflects Mo Xiong’s ongoing engagement with floral still life as a site of cross-cultural experimentation. His practice integrates compositional principles associated with Chinese painting traditions with more expansive approaches to colour and abstraction drawn from Western modern watercolour and expressive painting.
Flowers ultimately distils this synthesis into a concentrated visual field, where structure and spontaneity coexist, and familiar botanical motifs are reconfigured through rhythm, contrast, and painterly immediacy.
