This compact, jewel-like composition presents a densely layered surface in which pigment, metallic foil, and raised impasto elements converge into a vibrant field of chromatic and tactile intensity. At its centre, a vortex-like formation emerges from a constellation of red, turquoise, and gold passages, creating a sense of inward gravitational pull. The surface oscillates between painterly depth and sculptural relief, encouraging close, almost immersive viewing.
Moriuchi’s practice is grounded in a materially driven abstraction that privileges process, accumulation, and physical immediacy. The work’s surface density and gestural layering reflect a controlled yet intuitive engagement with material, where colour and texture operate as carriers of both optical and symbolic charge.
The composition may be understood within the broader legacy of postwar Japanese experimental art, particularly the Gutai emphasis on material autonomy and performative making. At the same time, the structured centrality of the form evokes mandala-like constructions, suggesting a meditative or cosmological reading embedded within its otherwise dynamic surface energy.
Wisp – The Thread of Good exemplifies Moriuchi’s ability to compress visual, tactile, and conceptual intensity into a small-scale format. The work’s synthesis of material exuberance and contemplative structure positions it as a distinctive example of post-Gutai abstraction with strong metaphysical undertones.
