LV JIANG
Girl, n.d.
ink and watercolor on paper
94 × 23 cm (37 × 9 in)
This elongated vertical composition presents a stylised female figure set against a densely articulated botanical environment. The figure, rendered with characteristic elongation and poised frontal presence, wears a garment incorporating American flag motifs, introducing an immediate tension between corporeal depiction and symbolic coding. The surrounding vegetation unfolds in saturated chromatic layers, heightening the work’s visual intensity.
Lv Jiang employs ink and watercolor with a fluid, hybridised approach in which linear precision and chromatic saturation operate in tandem. The figure’s stylisation is counterbalanced by the organic proliferation of surrounding forms, generating a visual oscillation between order and ornamental excess.
The work reflects broader tendencies within contemporary Chinese painting toward cultural hybridity and narrative ambiguity. Traditional pictorial structures are retained in the handling of space and brush line, while iconographic elements drawn from global visual culture introduce a layered semiotic field.
Girl demonstrates Lv Jiang’s interest in constructing images that operate simultaneously as figure, ornament, and cultural sign. The result is a composition that engages questions of identity and visual translation through a distinctly hybrid pictorial language.
