Landscape, n.d.
ink and color on paper
45 × 45 cm (17.7 × 17.7 in)
This vividly coloured landscape presents a fantastical natural environment dominated by a cascading turquoise waterfall that descends through densely layered mountain forms. The surrounding terrain is rendered in saturated tones of green, blue, and warm earth pigments, producing a visually immersive and almost luminous effect.
Shi Yunxiang’s technique is characterised by the extensive use of layered mineral pigments and fluid ink washes. These materials are manipulated to create depth and vibrational intensity, allowing the surface to oscillate between solidity and atmospheric dissolution. The result is a landscape that appears both structured and dreamlike.
While grounded in the conventions of shan shui painting, the work departs from traditional tonal restraint in favour of heightened chromatic expression. This expansion of palette and form situates the painting within a modern reinterpretation of classical landscape aesthetics.
Landscape exemplifies Shi Yunxiang’s distinctive visual language, in which natural forms are reimagined through expressive colour and spatial fluidity. The work conveys a sense of both natural grandeur and imaginative transformation.
