Artwork Description
LI TIANCHI
Flowers and Birds, n.d.
ink and color on paper
54 × 37 cm (21.3 × 14.6 in)
This composition departs decisively from traditional figuration, presenting an abstract field of layered ink washes punctuated by vivid chromatic accents in red, blue, and yellow. Rather than depicting recognisable flora or fauna, the work evokes the conceptual essence of the flower-and-bird genre through gestural movement, spatial rhythm, and tonal contrast.
Li Tianchi employs an experimental approach to ink, allowing pigment to diffuse freely across the paper while retaining moments of deliberate intervention. The resulting surface oscillates between spontaneity and compositional control, generating a sense of energetic flux that resists fixed interpretation.
The work engages in dialogue with both Chinese ink traditions and Western abstract expressionism. While rooted in the material language of ink painting, it abandons representational structure in favour of atmospheric suggestion and chromatic intensity, positioning itself within broader contemporary experimental practices.
Flowers and Birds reflects a conceptual redefinition of classical subject matter, where meaning is conveyed through gesture and materiality rather than depiction. The work stands as an assertive exploration of abstraction within the medium of ink on paper.
