Flowers and Birds, n.d.
ink and color on paper
69 × 69 cm (27.2 × 27.2 in)
This square-format composition presents an engaging interplay between stylised natural forms and controlled pictorial economy. Two brightly coloured birds emerge from behind dark, sculptural rock formations, their yellow plumage and pink beaks introducing points of visual immediacy against a backdrop of ochre cliffs and softened green foliage. The composition is tightly structured yet animated, with each element carefully calibrated to maintain equilibrium across the pictorial field.
Yang Zeng’s handling of ink and colour is characterised by clarity and restraint. The rocks are defined through bold, angular contours, while surrounding vegetation is rendered in lighter washes that soften the spatial transitions. The birds, positioned asymmetrically, introduce a sense of narrative spontaneity within an otherwise carefully ordered environment.
The work reflects a contemporary continuation of the flower-and-bird tradition, in which symbolic natural motifs are distilled into simplified, expressive forms. Rather than pursuing naturalistic description, the artist prioritises rhythm, silhouette, and chromatic contrast, aligning the composition with modern interpretations of xieyi practice.
Flowers and Birds demonstrates Yang Zeng’s ability to condense visual information into a coherent and immediately legible image. Its clarity of structure and controlled palette make it a compelling example of contemporary ink painting that remains grounded in classical thematic concerns.
