Description:
A finely crafted Neolithic pendant from the Hongshan Culture of Northeast China, dating between 3800 and 2700 BCE. This elegant piece is shaped as a "pig dragon," an early representation of the Chinese dragon. The pendant has a curved, circular body, a stylized head with large concentric-outlined eyes, a squared snout, and raised horns or ears. A perforation in the neck suggests it may have been worn as an amulet. Pig bones found in Hongshan burial sites indicate the animal had ritual significance.
Provenance:
From a private New Jersey, USA collection; previously part of a private collection at Arts du Monde, New York, USA, acquired in the 1990s.
